The vehicle is equipped with electronic multiport fuel injection that is supplied by a new electronic returnless fuel system. The powertrain control module (PCM) receives pressure information from a fuel pressure sensor mounted on the fuel injection rail. The PCM is able to maintain constant fuel pressure by varying the fuel pump module output.

This is accomplished by increasing or decreasing voltage supplied to the fuel pump module. The returnless fuel system offers improved economy, lower fuel temperatures and decreased fuel vapor in the fuel tank.

1. Depressurize the fuel system. (SEE Below)
2. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
3. Raise and support the vehicle.
4. Disconnect the evaporative emission pipe.
5. Remove the fuel filter outlet pipe.
6. Disconnect the fuel filter inlet pipe.
7. Remove the fuel filter and bracket.
8. Remove the fuel filter.
9. Remove the bolt.
10. Slide out the fuel filter.

1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
   • Note: Observe the direction of flow arrow.

Depressurizing the fuel system

WARNING: Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and can ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.

WARNING: The fuel system remains pressurized for a long time after the ignition is switched off. The fuel pressure must be released before attempting any repairs. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

1. Remove the fuel pump fuse.
2. Start the engine and allow to idle until the engine stalls.
3. Crank the engine for approximately five seconds to make sure the fuel injection supply manifold pressure has been released.
4. Install the fuel pump fuse.
